From urban studies to Polish fantasy and Hebrew dystopias

Last week, UPLIFT held its second seminar at the University of Naples L’Orientale, continuing the project’s exploration of speculative urban imaginaries and future topographies across world literatures.

The seminar opened with a keynote lecture by Adam Regiewicz (Jan Długosz University in Częstochowa), dedicated to urban studies in literary and cultural research. The discussion then moved toward Polish urban fantasy and contemporary Hebrew dystopian fiction through presentations by Andrea F. De Carlo and Raffaele Esposito.

Across different literary traditions and genres — from fantasy and magic to dystopia and apocalypse — the seminar focused on how fiction reimagines cities and urban environments under conditions of instability, conflict, and environmental pressure.
